Why Great-Looking Restaurants Still Sound Bad

Beautiful restaurant, great lighting, good food, and by the time your drinks arrive you're leaning across the table just to hear the person next to you. That's not bad luck. It's what happens when a restaurant budgets for everything except sound.

Why it happens

Most fit-outs never bring anyone in to plan the sound. It gets left to whichever contractor is handling the electrical work: a few ceiling speakers, a basic amplifier, wired in during the last week before opening. Meanwhile, everything else about the room — hard floors, glass, exposed ceilings, a bar sharing the same air as the dining room — is working against good sound without anyone noticing. The result is a feedback loop: the room gets loud, the music goes up to compete with it, and the room gets louder still.

We see this pattern often. Lili Cantonese Kitchen in Jubilee Hills is a good example of the layout itself, not because anyone measured its sound and found it lacking, but because a small, striking space (about 1,000 sq. ft., 45 seats, reached by a staircase, with a bar sharing the room with the dining tables) is exactly the kind of brief where sound needs to be planned in from day one, not added afterward.

It's not a small thing either. Diner surveys consistently find that noise is the single most common complaint about restaurants, ahead of slow service and even food quality. A room can look perfect and still lose the guest.

What actually fixes it

Two things, done together:

  • Treating the room. Soft materials, upholstery, drapery, acoustic panels worked into the decor, that absorb sound instead of letting it bounce endlessly off hard surfaces.
  • Designing the system properly. Separate volume control for the bar and the dining room, speakers placed for even coverage instead of hot spots and dead corners, and an amplifier that's never straining to be heard.

Done well, guests don't consciously notice any of it. They just find they can talk normally, and the background music actually stays in the background.

The technical breakdown: real products, real specs

Alternative line: Fonestar GAT-4507 6" ceiling speakers (7W RMS @ 100V, 110Hz–15kHz, 90dB sensitivity) on a Fonestar PROX-120S amplifier (120W RMS, 100V/4Ω output, 3 phantom-powered mic inputs, <1% THD). Bar zone

The amplifier stays constant: Stonewater SR-200 (60W+60W+120W @ 4Ω, built-in active crossover, dedicated subwoofer output, 7.3kg), driving an Impulse150 passive subwoofer (250W RMS, 12" woofer, 28Hz–250Hz, 4Ω, 16.3kg). What changes is the satellite speaker pair on top of it, and that depends on what the bar is for:

Zeta 3.5 is the default. Element 5 earns its place the moment the bar has any outdoor or patio-facing exposure. Micro 6 is what Stonewater itself specs for "restaurants, lounges, bars," a noticeably higher SPL ceiling and a more forward, live character. Aqua 6 is for when the bar is genuinely outdoors, poolside, rooftop edge, open courtyard, where the IP46 rating actually matters.

Fonestar's MAX-120Z or PROX-120Z (120W RMS, 3 independently volume-controlled 100V zones off one amplifier) is worth considering here too, particularly for three lighter zones that don't each need the SMX240's full 240W.

At this scale, keeping one polished source across every zone starts to matter. The Stonewater MP-01 media player (FM/Bluetooth/optical/coaxial/CD-AUX source switching, tone controls, a mic input with adjustable echo and delay, 2.5kg) can feed the SMX240 and the SR-200 or DX3i simultaneously through its dual-zone output, giving the whole venue one consistent source and one paging point instead of every zone amp running its own separate Bluetooth feed.

Unattended, mixer-free zones

Some zones shouldn't have a mixer at all: a back-of-house corridor, a small counter nook, a private cabin, anywhere staff shouldn't be touching level or source controls. The MP-01 handles this on its own.

Premium single-point zones

A private dining room, a VIP booth, or a fitting room often wants a quieter, higher-fidelity character from one near-invisible fixture rather than PA-style coverage, and that's a different wiring setup: a direct low-impedance stereo speaker on its own amplifier, not a 100V line shared with the rest of the venue.
